If you have injuries or illnesses that limit or affect your movement, then you need to find a physiatrist. Also known as rehabilitation physicians, they mostly specialize in nerve, bone and muscle treatment. Treatment may range from spinal cord injuries to simple pains such as sore shoulders. Emphasis is usually placed on developing a program that allows the piecing together of a person’s life after injury or disease, without the need of undergoing surgery. To accurately get the source of your ailment, physiatrists perform a thorough history check and physical examinations and get problems which other diagnostic tests might not reveal.

When you want to find a physiatrist, you should know the specific problems each has specialized in. They treat chronic and acute pain which involves the peripheral and central nervous systems, pain disorders of the musculoskeletal system which may be acquired, traumatic or non-traumatic. Pain disorders include headaches, arthritis, sport or work related injuries, neck and back pains. The pain may also be due to medical diseases, cancer pain, and pain due to surgery such as laminectomy which involves removing a portion of the vertebral bone. Treatment may also alleviate fibromyalgia, chest wall pain syndrome, reflex sympathetic dystrophy and neuropathy pain.

Diseases affect both adults and children. You may need to find a physiatrist who specializes in pediatric disorders such as long term and acute spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injury, as well as congenital and acquired amputations. They manage muscle diseases that are present in children such as; spinal muscular atrophy, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, pediatric burns and congenital torticollis. Since each case varies, the physiatrist may prescribe therapy to improve muscle strength and also help them relax. Look for a physiatrist who may also prescribe medical equipment such as bracing, wheelchairs and communication devices.

Neurological disorders that affect children include; Birth Brachial Plexus Palsy, Cerebral Palsy and Spina Bifida. To determine the extent of damage and spasticity, physicians use electrodiagnostic medicine to treat the condition. Other neurological conditions include; stroke, post polio syndrome, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Parkinson’s disease, lupus, Multiple Sclerosis, brain injuries, spinal cord injuries and dystonias. Rehabilitation also plays a major role in the patient’s recovery process. You will need to find a physiatrist in cases of cardiac diseases to rehabilitate and prevent a recurrence of the incident. Exercise, stress management, change of diet and family counseling are all part of the rehabilitation process.

Individuals suffering from cancer may need rehabilitation, especially those who may be in the middle of treatment. This may include pain control, management of spasticity, bladder and bowel movement. For those who have suffered a stroke, physiatrists will help you relearn tasks, regain lost motor and sensory skills and to be overall independent. Rehabilitation may also help in coping with pulmonary and vascular diseases, burns, fractures, rheumatic disease and amputations. All these treatment processes require time and patience from the patient and their families. However, if you find a physiatrist who is effective you will be back in the game of life, rather than watching from the sidelines.
