Among the many forms of foot pain felt by adults, heel pain is the most common. It is usually a result of activities done during the day or sometimes due to exercises. Among the bones found in our foot, the heel bone is the largest and it is the heel that usually comes in contact first with the ground when we walk. The weight of the body is absorbed by the foot during walking.

Heel Pain may be caused due to two factors: and underlying condition or may be due swelling and tenderness due to physical stress.

Running, along with other high impact activities can be a cause for heel pain. Since the foot absorbs the body’s weight, running, especially on hard surfaces could place stress to the heel, usually during impact. Because of this tension, your heel may swell and become tender causing pain. Wearing shoes that has poor absorption and lack of support could place stress on the heel, causing pain. Turning your heel outward or inward suddenly may place your feet in great stress that it can cause pain, and worse, an injury.

Conditions that may be associated in having heel pain may include Achilles tendinitis, Bursitis, Plantar Fascitis and bone spurs. When these conditions are causing the pain in your heels, it is best to seek the attention of medical experts in order to treat these conditions.

In treating heel pain, it is usually the most difficult kind of pain to heal, usually taking months to subside. Despite of this, most of these cases can be corrected using conservative methods. Examples of conservative methods are wearing a shoe that fits properly for proper support and cushion, application of cold compress to affected area, or avoidance of activities that could aggravate the condition.

When you seek for medical treatment, different treatment would be used and would require the help of a health practitioner. Physical therapy for example would require a professional physical therapist in managing heel pain. The use of shoe inserts or orthotics could be prescribed in order to manage the condition by correcting misalignments and imbalances providing proper support, alleviating pressure that causes stress to the heel. Medications would then be prescribed to reduce inflammation and pain.

A therapy known as extracorporeal shock wave therapy could be used to in managing heel pain. This therapy is a non-invasive procedure, meaning it does not require any opening to the body, in order to treat heel pain with the use of shock waves.  It usually done for about 30 minutes and the patient is usually placed under a general anesthesia. When these treatments are found to be ineffective after 6 months, conventional surgery may be needed in order to treat the condition.

The treatment of heel pain can vary depending on the severity of the condition. Management is usually done according to the cause of it. One way prevent heel pain is to have a knowledge about it and the factors that would cause it. Avoidance of the said factors can be of great help to keep your feet healthy and pain free.
