Causes of Knee Pain

Knee pain is a common complaint that has many causes. Determining what is the cause of your symptoms may be straightforward, or it may require special tests to make a diagnosis. Once the cause of your knee pain can be determined, appropriate treatment can begin.

Medial Collaterial Ligament (MCL) Injury

The medial collateral ligament (or MCL) is one of four ligaments that act to stabilize the knee joint. The medial collateral ligament may be injured in isolation, or in combination with the meniscus and other ligaments within the knee joint.

Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Injury

The anterior cruciate ligament (or ACL) is one of four ligaments that act to stabilize the knee joint. ACL may be injured in isolation, or in combination with the meniscus and other ligaments within the knee joint. Knee buckling is a common symptom.

Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL) Injury

Injury to the posterior cruciate ligament, or PCL, is an uncommon knee injury. When the PCL is injured, patients may have problems with knee instability.

Chondromalacia (Runner's Knee)

Chondromalacia patellae, also called Runner's Knee, is a common orthopedic condition that refers to softening of the articular cartilage of the kneecap.

Patellar Subluxation and Dislocation

Also called an unstable kneecap, patients who experience this painful knee condition have a patella that does not track evenly within its groove on the femur.

Pre-Patellar Bursitis

Prepatellar bursitis, or Housemaid's Knee Syndrome, is a condition of swelling and inflammation over the front of the knee. This is commonly seen in patients who kneel for extended periods, such as carpet layers and gardeners.

Patellar Tendonitis

Patellar tendonitis, also call jumper's knee, is pain in the band of tissue that connects the kneecap to the shin bone.

Patellar and Quadriceps Tendon Rupture

The quadriceps tendon and the patellar tendon (or patellar ligament) are important components of the extensor mechanism of the knee. Treatment of injuries of the quadriceps or patellar tendon may require surgery if fully ruptured.
