Whether you have just received a sports-related injury, had surgery, had a stroke or been in an accident, in order for you to have a speedy recovery you are going to need physical therapy. The primary objective of physical therapy is to enhance healing through reducing inflammation and pain and increasing the patient’s range of motion. Some of the physical therapy treatments that are available include:

Stretching – This is one of the physical therapy treatments that include the manipulation of various body parts that will help to stretch connective tissues like ligaments, tendons and muscles. Stretching helps to relax the tight areas surrounding the joints, this helps to increase the overall range of motion post-injury or post-surgery.

Cryotherapy – This type of physical therapy treatment is also known as ice pack therapy; this involves placing extremely cold packs on the injured areas of the body. The very cold temperatures help to reduce inflammation and swelling. The cold temperatures help to slow down the speed of nerve conduction in the area that needs treatment.

TENS – TENS or Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation is another of the physical therapy treatments, and it is used particularly for pain management. This is one of the physical therapy treatments involves actually placing electrodes on the area that needs the treatment. The electrodes will then pass charges to the affected muscles, which will then help to reduce pain. TENS is generally used in physical therapy that has been prescribed for individuals that suffer from chronic pain.

Massage – There are several people who still do not think that massage therapy is one of the types of physical therapy treatments. The continuous long strokes, kneading strokes and beating or percussive strokes helps to reduce inflammation and pain, increase relaxation and enhances range of motion of the affected area.

Iontophoresis – As one of the physical therapy treatments, Iontophoresis focus primarily on reducing inflammation. First, steroids are applied to the injured area, and then an electrical current is applied to the area where the steroids have already been applied. This helps the steroids to be absorbed deeper into the affected area, which reduces inflammation and in turn reduces pain.

Ultrasound – The final of the physical therapy treatments that will be discussed in this article is the ultrasound. Ultrasounds make use of sound waves that transmitted deep into the affected area of the skin; this creates heat by reacting with the body. This is probably one of the only physical therapy treatments that are not used on recent injuries, as the heat produced may work against decreasing inflammation.
