Physical therapy is also termed as physiotherapy. It is a branch of health profession that is often called or abbreviated as PT. Physical therapy mainly talks about making the most of life by determining the proper movements and rehabilitation of each of the body parts.
Physical therapy is applied through the interaction of the physical therapist and the patient in order to assess and diagnose the present activities and movements of a certain body part. The therapy is being done or performed by a physical therapist or a physiotherapist or at times it is being given by a PT assistant with the supervision of the licensed physical therapist.
PTs are the healthcare providers who lay their hands on each of the patients of all ages, from new born babies to people of old ages. They are the ones who diagnose a person if he or she has a certain medical problem. Any illnesses, health-related conditions and injuries that are linked to movement and proper performance of their body parts can be attended to by a physical therapist.
To aid the Physical Therapist in diagnosing the current situation of the patient, he or she can use the history of patient’s physical examination. Through proper diagnosis, the physical therapist may then arrive with a proper approach or management plan to be applied on the patient. Aside from the medical history of the patient, a physical therapist may also use laboratory results and other medical imaging outputs in determining the patient’s condition. Other hospital or medical procedure which may be of help are the Electrodiagnostic testing or the electromyograms.
Physical Therapy management may involve prescription or being of assistance to a certain specific exercise that will help the patient get rehabilitated. Manual therapy procedures, getting the patient educated and other helpful procedures may also be included in the physical therapy management. Aside from all these, a Physical therapist helps in maintaining the mobility leading to a healthier life. He is responsible in formulating the wellness program of his patients until the patients’ ultimate strength and of movement is gained back. The PT should make it sure that the particular body part can already perform in full function. More often than not body functions are affected by the aging process of our body system, while some are affected by an unfortunate accident or injury, disease and some other external or environmental factors.
Physical therapy may come in many different points of specialization. There is a PT for cardiopulmonary, neurologic, orthopaedic and paediatrics.
