Symptoms of injuries in the spine include mild pain that when not treated properly can lead to paralysis and eventually to death. Serious damages to the vertebrae can also cause loss of total control in some body parts. The spine is seen as a complex structure composed mainly of bones, nerves, joints and disc being held together by muscles, some tendons and a few ligaments. That is the reason why problems in that area are more likely to develop such as back pain, which is normally caused by extensive physical activities like lifting and recurring movements. On the other hand, it is important to determine first the root cause of the spine injury before a spine rehabilitation program can be developed. In the spine rehabilitation program, treatment will start by evaluating the patient’s speed, motion and movement.

As mentioned, it would be helpful to know the common types of injuries related to spine so that a sound and effective spine rehabilitation program can be developed.
  • Vertebrae Fracture
Fracture commonly occurred in the lumbar area that can cause pain to expand transversely to the lower back and tight hamstring muscle often causing muscle imbalance and noticeable posture change.
  • Vertebrae Abnormality This kind of abnormality causes pain thus, limiting joint movement. Common type of symptoms includes pain in the neck, arm and shoulder as well as loss of balance and headache coming from the back of head.
  • Spinal Cord Damage
In whiplash injury, the damage is in the spinal cord wherein there is a downward pressure on the spinal nerve that is linked to the spinal cord. There is a broad range of symptoms ranging from numbness, stiffening in the neck area, blurred visions to irritability.
  • Disc Injury
Common among the disc injuries is the herniated disc where the disc is a tear causing a gel like filling to leak out thereby putting pressure on the nerves surrounding the spinal cord. This type of injury is very common at the lower back area and the symptoms may include tingling and pain in the back and buttocks.
  • Thoracic Muscle Strain
Since there are muscles surrounding the spine, this type of injury can occur when the muscles at the back are strained due to improper lifting of heavy loads. The thoracic muscle strain can limit motions and cause severe back pains.
  • Spinal Ligament Sprain
Due to improper blood flow in the ligaments, injury on this area takes longer than that of the muscle sprain. More care and long period of rest is necessary for fast recovery.

After identifying the cause of the spine injury, a spine rehabilitation program can be formed. Again the program will depend if it will be done before or after the surgery. The orthopedic doctor together with the physical therapist will identify the treatment needed, workout routine including the duration and frequency. The physical therapist will ensure that the program is done as scheduled. The objectives of the spine rehabilitation program if for the patient to resume to usual activities, lessen pain and inflammation, regain flexibility, scope of motion and stability of movements plus promote tissue remedial.

With the aid of the spine rehabilitation program, fast recovery from the various spine injuries can be easily achieved.
